Anthropic’s IPO, grid upgrades and exercise drugs

·1 min read

Anthropic has filed its IPO prospectus, bringing scrutiny to tensions between its safety mission, commercial ambitions and pursuit of superhuman AI. The 335-page document devotes 100 pages or so to risks. The filing highlights catastrophic AI risks, huge computing costs, safety failures and a month-long training pause, alongside soaring revenues and substantial losses. Its founders will retain voting control after the IPO, while the listing could help shape the future of the AI investment boom.

Rising electricity demand from data centers, EVs and other sources is driving interest in solid-state transformers. Conventional transformers are essential to moving electricity efficiently across long distances, but they are complicated and in short supply. Researchers and companies hope solid-state alternatives can reduce power losses and ease supply constraints. The technology remains in development.

Researchers are also investigating medicines that reproduce some of exercise’s benefits by deciphering how movement affects the body. The aim is not to replace workouts, but to help people whose frailty, disability or chronic illness limits their ability to exercise. Potential treatments seek to capture benefits associated with movement, including stronger muscles and bones, lower blood pressure and improved mood.
