Steam Frame patches target mainline Linux support

·1 min read

Patches submitted for inclusion in the mainline Linux kernel 7.4 would add initial support for Valve’s Steam Frame VR headset. Neil Armstrong submitted the changes on behalf of Valve Software. The device has already been supported in downstream SteamOS kernel builds since its launch in September.

The proposed support covers system reserved memory, regulators, GPIO keys, PMIC functions, PMIC ADC channels, USB gadget functionality, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth. It also includes I2C, basic peripherals and the built-in SD card slot.

Hardware support is not yet feature-complete, but the patches establish a foundation for further kernel work. Bringing these capabilities into the mainline kernel should make it easier for other Linux distributions to support Steam Frame without relying on extensive custom code and tools.
