Anthropic files for potentially record-breaking IPO
Anthropic has filed for an initial public offering that could raise as much as $100 billion, according to reports, potentially surpassing SpaceX’s record $86 billion offering. The company plans to debut next month on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker “ANT.” Its final valuation and offering price remain uncertain. Proceeds could fund acquisitions, technology and infrastructure as competition with OpenAI and other rivals intensifies.
Revenue reached more than $16 billion in the first half of the year, or 14 times the comparable period last year. Anthropic nevertheless reported a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, although losses excluding certain items were substantially smaller. The offering comes amid investor unease over the AI sector’s financing needs and the possibility of weakening demand for its shares.
The filing warns that AI could enable chemical weapons development, authoritarian surveillance and catastrophic harm. CEO Dario Amodei has urged slower development so safety measures can catch up. A special share class would give the co-founders 50.1% of shareholder votes, while an independent Long-Term Benefit Trust has authority to appoint directors to help protect public safety. Anthropic also remains in litigation with the Pentagon over supply chain risk designations following its refusal to permit unrestricted military use of its technology.
