Apple shifts high-end Mac chips toward M7

·1 min read

Apple is expected to skip high-end M6 variants for Macs and instead focus its next major performance push on an AI-oriented M7 lineup. The M6 generation is still expected to appear in lower-end devices, but Pro, Max and Ultra-class updates are being pushed to the following architecture.

The M7 Pro and M7 Max are described as scheduled for as early as the end of 2027, while the M7 Ultra is on track for 2028. The base M7 memory bandwidth target is cited at 240GB/s, while expected M6 parts are described as topping out around 200GB/s of memory bandwidth and 12 graphics cores.

The shift places more weight on Apple’s unified-memory Mac designs as interest grows in running capable AI models locally rather than relying entirely on cloud services. Discussion around the roadmap also highlights constraints from rising memory costs, high-capacity Mac configurations, and the competitive pressure from Nvidia GPUs and data center accelerators.
