Stripe targets the token economy with OpenRouter deal

·1 min read

Stripe agreed to acquire OpenRouter, a gateway that routes requests across 400+ models from 80+ providers, in a deal reported at roughly $7.5B. The move positions model routing as part of the transaction layer for AI, where infrastructure can choose providers based on capability, cost, latency, and reliability instead of relying on a single hard-coded model.

Ramp’s Router.com points to the same shift, offering one API that sends each request to the cheapest model that meets a performance bar and making it free through the end of 2026. Inference calls are becoming cost-allocation decisions, bringing engineering choices closer to CFO oversight.

Etched raised $700 million at a $21 billion valuation and shipped its first rack to Jane Street, which led the round after testing the hardware. DeepSeek also introduced an experimental multimodal model for reasoning over images and screenshots, extending its efficiency-focused approach into visual intelligence.

Research highlights included Google Cloud AI Research’s EnvHarness for customizing static environments, Microsoft’s Agent Lightning v1.0 for agentic reinforcement learning, NVIDIA’s AVO for autonomous evolutionary search, and a Princeton-led study finding LLM agent skills work mainly as procedural anchors rather than sources of missing factual knowledge.
