Apple weighs more memory suppliers amid cost pressure
Apple reported record quarterly results for the second quarter while facing a tighter and more expensive memory market. During an earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said the company has been helped by stockpiled memory inventory, which has softened the impact of recent memory inflation.
Cook also pointed to lower costs for some non-memory components in Apple’s device bill of materials. Apple currently buys memory from three suppliers: SK hynix, Micron and Samsung, while also evaluating other potential sources.
The supplier comments align with reported evaluations of YMTC for NAND Flash and CXMT for DRAM. Apple is likely navigating some form of regulatory approval as it considers expanding its memory supply chain.
