AMD reportedly takes most of Samsung’s planned Taylor fab output

·1 min read

Samsung has reportedly secured orders for the entire planned output of Taylor Fab 2 in Texas, with AMD accounting for most of the demand. The facility will manufacture HBM base dies for AMD and NVIDIA using a 2 nm process, according to industry sources cited by Korea’s Maeil Business Newspaper. AMD’s orders alone reportedly put pressure on the fab’s capacity. Samsung declined to confirm customer-related details.

The base die is the logic chip beneath an HBM memory stack, not an AMD CPU or GPU. Samsung plans to combine the Texas-made dies with DRAM produced in South Korea and deliver finished HBM. Its current HBM4 and sampled HBM4E use 4 nm base dies, suggesting the planned process targets later memory generations.

The reported arrangement follows Lisa Su’s October visit to Samsung, when Samsung reportedly sought foundry orders in exchange for urgently needed HBM supplies. A March memorandum of understanding had already established Samsung as the primary HBM4 supplier for AMD’s Instinct MI455X.
