Intel releases 14A design kit ahead of production ramp
Intel released version 0.9 of its process design kit for the 14A manufacturing node in late October, enabling customers to evaluate the process and begin trial designs. Those designs are intended to transition easily into production using PDK version 1.0, which Intel expects to make available in the first quarter of 2027. Final specifications and requirements are being established as the company fine-tunes the process.
Risk production is planned for the second half of 2027, followed by high-volume production in 2028. Intel has processed tens of thousands of 14A wafers in pilot runs and is focusing on yield improvements and minor process adjustments before risk production begins.
Compared with Intel’s 18A process, 14A targets a 15-20% performance improvement at the same power level, or a 25-35% power reduction at the same performance level. Intel also expects up to a 30% improvement in chip density, although it remains unclear whether that refers to logic or SRAM scaling.
