The Citadel guides instructors on syllabus design and AI rules
The Citadel’s Center for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching and Learning provides an accessible syllabus template that combines required course policies with guidance on setting clear generative AI expectations. Available in every Canvas course shell, the unpublished template lets instructors customize course information, grading, assignments, student resources and technology requirements before sharing it with students.
Instructors can select a red-light policy prohibiting generative AI, a yellow-light policy permitting specific tasks within limits, or a green-light policy allowing use with acknowledgment. The choice should reflect learning outcomes and distinguish between AI support, such as brainstorming or draft feedback, and uses that replace thinking students must demonstrate independently. Expectations can vary by assignment and should appear in assignment directions as well as the syllabus.
The guidance recommends explaining acceptable and unacceptable uses, specifying acknowledgment requirements and discussing expectations in class. Instructors should also align the separate Generative AI Statement page in Canvas with their syllabus. Accessibility practices include built-in heading styles, image alt text and descriptive links. Any AI-assisted syllabus content should be checked for accuracy, consistency with Citadel policies and accessibility before publication.
