Ohio’s AI training draws participants, but career gains remain unclear

·1 min read

Ohio’s AI Ready Ohio pilot is helping residents learn workplace AI skills, but its impact on employment and wages remains unmeasured. Launched in Nov. 2025 through a partnership between JobsOhio and the Enterprise Technology Association, the program aims to help workers save time and money. Association CEO and co-founder Summer Crenshaw said over 3,000 people have started the certification process, and over 2,000 have earned at least one certificate.

Software developer Musa Hakim Jr. said the training strengthened his understanding of responsible AI use, including establishing company rules for the technology. He uses AI while developing an app that helps teenagers set goals and track progress. Hakim said the app now has over 10,000 people waiting to use it, although he was already using AI before taking the training. Crenshaw said some participants are applying their skills to start businesses, but acknowledged that much of the evidence remains anecdotal.

Ohio State University economist Bruce Weinberg cautioned that certificate totals do not establish career improvements. Evaluations could track whether unemployed participants find work or employed participants move into better-paying roles. Employment changes could emerge within months, while wage growth could take years to assess. Crenshaw hopes to survey participants at the end of 2027 to better understand outcomes.
