Windows 11 adds groundwork for unified memory controls

Microsoft is preparing dedicated controls for unified memory in Windows 11, with recent Windows 11 build 29648.1000 exposing a hidden feature called IntelligentCarveout. The build, originally released on August 17, points to new system-level handling for SoCs that combine CPU and GPU components in one package and use external LPDDR5X as a shared memory pool.

The controls are expected to support independent partitions within that shared memory for platforms such as NVIDIA’s upcoming RTX Spark, AMD Ryzen Halo, and similar APU-like chips. Microsoft linked the work to RTX Spark during Computex, saying Windows support is being improved to make up to 128 GB of unified memory more useful by raising the total system memory accessible to the GPU. The change is intended to help high-memory systems load larger local AI models and render more complex projects.
