UK taskforce urges action on compute, skills and AI sovereignty

·1 min read

The UK could unlock a £75 billion economic boost by 2035 through faster AI adoption, according to the Project Sovereign AI Leadership (SAIL) taskforce. Its proposed “Prosperity Compact” would bring government, business, regions and citizens together within the next 12 months to coordinate delivery. Senior executives at Microsoft, NScale, Cisco and BT have backed the call.

The taskforce’s ten recommendations include a Compute Accelerator service to help local authorities identify and plan mid-scale data center and networking sites. Roughly 73 GW of data center applications are in the connection queue, with about 93% concentrated in the largest size bands. The proposals also seek grid connection reforms that prioritize homes on distribution networks and fast-track data centers on transmission lines.

Skills England would lead targeted AI training across construction, care, professional services and manufacturing. To clarify what sovereign AI means beyond marketing claims, the taskforce proposes a workload classification framework assessing sovereignty across infrastructure, data, models, applications and workloads.

For public services using hosted frontier AI models, the recommendations call for Cabinet Office guidance, gap analyses and fallback mechanisms, starting with healthcare. They also seek to return the Government Digital Service to the center of government to lead procurement. The taskforce emphasizes coordinated investment in infrastructure, power, cybersecurity and workforce skills to spread benefits across regions and communities.
