TSMC weighs role in Elon Musk’s Terafab project

·1 min read

TSMC is considering a collaboration with Elon Musk’s Terafab project aimed at building advanced end-to-end semiconductor manufacturing in the United States. The companies are discussing a potential joint venture that would support American chip production, with TSMC developing manufacturing capabilities while Terafab provides financial backing, equity participation, purchase agreements, and other support needed to keep new fab capacity running.

The talks come as some managers question whether Intel will deliver on its commitments to Terafab, creating a need to dual-source expertise. Intel has already partnered with Terafab, with Tesla becoming Intel’s first major customer for the 14A node at Musk’s Terafab AI chip complex in Austin.

Key details of the Intel arrangement remain unclear, including whether Terafab will license the 14A node PDK. TSMC and Intel could both participate in the project, though TSMC may keep its most advanced nodes in Taiwan rather than move its latest semiconductor technology outside its home base. Any division of work between Intel and TSMC remains undetermined.
