TSMC starts A14 pilot production ahead of 2027 risk run

TSMC has reportedly begun pilot production for its A14 node, which produces 1.4 nm chips, at Hsinchu Science Park’s Baoshan Fab 20 and Central Taiwan Science Park’s Fab 25. The runs are intended to test the viability of the process and give customers a view of how potential designs perform in TSMC’s production environment. Early progress is described as stronger than expected, raising the possibility that the schedule could move forward by a few months if major yield or production issues do not emerge.

Risk production is scheduled to begin next year in 2027, followed by high-volume manufacturing in 2028. Compared with the N2 2 nm node, A14 is said to offer up to 15% higher speeds at the same power level or up to 30% power reduction at the same frequency. TSMC also claims a 20% increase in logic density, positioning the company against Samsung and Intel, including Intel’s 14A, in the angstrom era of chip manufacturing.
