Regulators say existing rules apply to autonomous AI agents

·1 min read

Organizations deploying autonomous AI agents remain responsible for their use and for compliance with existing legal and regulatory frameworks, four leading UK regulators have said. The warning places responsibility with the organizations using these systems, rather than treating autonomous operation as an exemption from established rules. Agentic AI does not sit outside the legal obligations that already apply to its deployment and use.

The regulators involved are the Bank of England, Competition and Markets Authority, Financial Conduct Authority and Information Commissioner’s Office. Their position makes organizational accountability central to the use of autonomous agents. For organizations adopting these systems, the core message is that an agent’s ability to act autonomously does not remove the deploying organization’s responsibility to comply with applicable requirements.
