John Ternus takes over as Apple CEO

·1 min read

John Ternus has taken over as Apple’s chief executive, ending Tim Cook’s 15-year run in the role. Cook will become executive chairman after leading Apple through major growth that lifted its market value to $4.6 trillion, driven largely by the iPhone.

Ternus, 51, joined Apple in 2001 and most recently served as senior vice president of hardware engineering. His appointment comes as Apple faces scrutiny over its slower push into generative AI, including delays to new AI-powered features and a decision to rebuild Siri using Google’s Gemini technology.

The updated Siri is scheduled for a full-scale rollout in September after positive early feedback. Ternus is expected to make his first major public appearance as CEO at Apple’s product launch event on September 9, where the company is expected to show its first foldable iPhone, new Apple Watch models, and the rebuilt Siri.

Apple is also working on AirPods with environment-sensing cameras, smart glasses, and other AI-focused devices, some of which have been delayed by software readiness issues. Ternus is expected to rely on Sabih Khan and Kevan Parekh as Apple manages supply chain and financial pressures, including a memory and storage chip shortage the company does not expect to resolve before next year.
