IBM uses Bob to speed payments software delivery
IBM’s Enterprise Payment Services team deployed IBM Bob, an AI development assistant embedded in its testing workflow, as part of a broader push to accelerate software delivery without adding engineering headcount. The team operates a regulated payments platform where financial rules, operational resilience, security scrutiny and client delivery demands converge in a single codebase.
The most mature gains came in testing. After Bob was used as a test automation generator for the EPS Wires payment platform, the team reported a 70% reduction in test automation creation, a 90% reduction in regression test backlog and an 80% reduction in regression execution cycle time. QA engineers now spend more time reviewing and refining generated tests, while CI/CD integration surfaces regression failures within hours of a commit.
IBM also reported 30-40% productivity improvements in requirements work after Bob was loaded with platform documentation, regulatory standards, coding standards and non-functional requirements. In engineering, projected efficiency improvements range from 30-50%, with use cases including code reviews, vulnerability management, library upgrades and code modification recommendations.
The rollout relies on a semi-autonomous model in which human reviewers validate AI output before acceptance. Business analysts, code owners, QA engineers and future L3 support staff remain responsible for reviewing Bob’s work, reflecting IBM’s view that contextual grounding and human oversight are necessary for regulated payments software.
