Garfield AI wins first court trial in UK
Garfield AI, the first AI-based law firm to receive UK regulatory approval, has won its first court trial after supporting freelancer Tamires Camal Taquidir in a dispute over unpaid fees. The claimant used the platform to generate pre-action correspondence, prepare and issue court proceedings, dispute a counterclaim, handle document production, and prepare witness statements and trial bundles.
Following a three-hour trial at Wandsworth County Court on 14 May 2026, the court found in favour of Camal Taquidir, awarding £7,000 and dismissing the counterclaim. She paid around £400 in Garfield AI fees to recover the £7,000 owed, while the defendant instructed both a solicitor and a barrister.
Garfield AI was founded by a technologist and a lawyer to help small businesses pursue unpaid invoices, and received Solicitors Regulation Authority approval last year. Co-founder Daniel Long said the case showed regulated AI-powered legal services could help people and businesses enforce rights when traditional routes are too slow, costly or complex. Lawyer Mark Lewis said the result validated the platform for small claims, where legal costs can block access to justice.
