Apple plans M7 Ultra with 1.5 TB of unified memory
Apple has overhauled its M-Series roadmap, scrapping M6 Pro and M6 Max while continuing work on a base M6 SoC. The chip is being tested in the base MacBook Pro with CPU microarchitecture improvements, stronger NPU performance for local AI processing, and memory bandwidth targeted around 200 GB/s, up from 123 GB/s in the current base M5 SoC. The integrated GPU is also expected to get a 20% increase in core count, moving to 12 GPU cores from the M5’s 10-core configuration.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple plans an M7 Ultra with faster local AI, more CPU, GPU, and NPU power, and total memory capacity of 1.5 TB, a configuration currently associated with Mac Pro desktop systems. The base M7 is expected in the first half of 2027 with memory bandwidth of about 240 GB/s and is described as the first Intel-manufactured Apple Silicon design, using the 18A-P node. M7 Pro and M7 Max are expected in late 2027, followed by an M7 Ultra for Mac Studio in 2028.
