Anthropic leads private generative AI startup ranking

·1 min read

Anthropic ranks as the leading independent generative AI startup, narrowly ahead of OpenAI, after its annualized revenue run rate exceeded $65 billion. OpenAI remains a close second with annualized revenue above $40 billion and ChatGPT distribution that includes more than 900 million weekly active users.

The gap between the top two and the rest of the private market is stark. Anthropic and OpenAI together account for more than $105 billion of reported annualized revenue, while nine prominent independent challengers total roughly $4 billion using their latest credible reference points. Perplexity follows with revenue above $750 million as it expands from search into agents, while Mistral AI ranks highly because of frontier-model ownership and its role in European sovereign AI despite more than $400 million in annual recurring revenue.

Below the frontier labs, the strongest startups are building around durable workflows. Replit, Cognition and Lovable are competing in software creation and coding, while ElevenLabs leads voice with more than $500 million ARR and Harvey leads legal AI at around $350 million ARR. Sierra remains important but carries valuation risk at $15.8 billion, and Suno’s $300 million ARR is weighed down by copyright litigation. SpaceX-owned xAI and Cursor are excluded because they are no longer independent startups.
