Amex prepares AI agents for business payments
American Express is expanding its corporate payments offering while preparing AI agents and AI-powered accounts payable workflows for release in the coming months. The company is relying on internal development to sell automation for business processes that still absorb significant time and expense, positioning the effort as a response to companies that want established providers.
Changes announced for Amex Corporate combine business payment cards, expense management software and an enhanced mobile app in a single product bundle for midsize and large businesses. The corporate card offers 1.5% cash back on eligible purchases, physical and virtual employee cards, and software that automatically generates submission-ready expenses as purchases are made.
Amex’s AI pipeline also includes a payroll system with “AI-powered insights” planned for early 2027. The agentic AI work draws on technology from Hyper, an AI company Amex bought earlier this year, and Center, an expense management company acquired in 2025. Analysts and industry observers said the move could help Amex defend its position as PayPal, Intuit, Shopify, Meta and fintech rivals such as Ramp and Extend expand business automation tools.
