AI tools, awards and regulation reshape screen sectors

·1 min read

AI is becoming a core production lever in India’s entertainment sector. JioStar, Pocket FM and ShareChat are integrating generative AI tools into pipelines to cut costs, while smaller production houses gain room to self-finance projects, retain intellectual property and distribute directly across digital platforms. Bengaluru startup Flam raised forty million dollars in a round led by QED Investors to fund AI model research and global enterprise expansion.

Premium storytelling remains a major industry focus. Shah Rukh Khan confirmed his recovery from filming injuries ahead of a Christmas release directed by Siddharth Anand, while Rashmika Mandanna was cast as M S Subbulakshmi in a biopic directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri. Apple Television’s “Widows Bay” won Best Comedy at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, and “NAZA” won the Special Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival for its examination of surveillance and AI targeting systems in Gaza.

Policy and compliance pressures are also rising. The Uttarakhand Film Development Council is launching awards under the Uttarakhand Film Policy 2024, with online applications open from 16 September 2026 to 05 October 2026. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has formed a panel to address “cultural pollution” on streaming platforms, and the Delhi High Court dismissed PB Agro’s plea over notices linked to alleged surrogate advertising for Vimal pan masala.
