Capitol News Illinois sets limits on newsroom AI use

·1 min read

Capitol News Illinois introduced an AI policy in late 2025 that treats the technology as a tool for journalists, not a replacement for their work. The policy requires journalist oversight and rigorous fact-checking. It bars AI-generated text in public-facing news products, while requiring disclosure if a situation calls for its use.

Reporters may cautiously use AI for data analysis, transcription, headline and search optimization, and social platform writing. They must verify factual claims independently, disclose AI’s role to editors and never cite it as a primary information source. Confidential information, anonymous sources and privately obtained documents must not be entered into third-party AI tools.

Published stories must explain uses such as AI-assisted data analysis, while routine transcription, social media and search optimization do not require individual disclosures. AI-powered chatbots and interactive products must explain how the technology is incorporated. AI-generated audio versions of journalists’ stories are permitted to improve accessibility.

The newsroom prohibits AI-generated news imagery and AI alterations to journalists’ images. Newsworthy synthetic images may appear with clear labeling and context. Non-editorial staff may use AI for operational, development and copywriting tasks after discussing tools with managers, subject to thorough human review and confidentiality protections. The policy will be revisited as technology evolves.
