AI reshapes jobs without mass layoffs

Warnings that AI would wipe out large parts of the white-collar workforce have not been borne out so far. Since 2022, the unemployment rate for the 20% of workers most exposed to AI rose by 0.77 percentage points, compared with a 0.85 percentage-point increase for the least-exposed workers, according to a Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research analysis.

Labor economists say AI is changing jobs more than eliminating them. Employers are consolidating roles, slowing hiring for automatable tasks and raising expectations for speed, quality and self-sufficiency. About 74% of employers consider AI skills a strong advantage or requirement, while 13% require them company-wide rather than only in technical roles, according to ZipRecruiter.

Productivity gains are already visible in some workplaces. At Bolt.new, a three-person analytics team built an AI agent that saves 12 to 13 hours of manual work a week and produces output comparable to a 30-to-40-person team. Some economists warn the next phase could make more work temporary, freelance or easily replaceable, with About 35% of the US workforce already considered easily replaceable in one MIT-linked analysis.
