Portugal’s newsrooms focus AI on production and workflow

·1 min read

Portugal has 35 verified, source-linked AI implementations across 23 news organizations in the Journalism AI Index, covering 2021-2026. Content production and automation account for 29% of documented cases, compared with 14% worldwide. Editorial workflow and writing assistance represent 23%, against 12% globally. Most implementations are funded through organizations’ own budgets.

Commercial and publishing applications extend beyond drafting. Observador’s subscription concierge uses SMS and WhatsApp to conduct personalized conversations, negotiate within commercial limits and complete transactions. Wizpress turns press releases from journalists’ inboxes into initial news drafts directly in their publishing systems, serving small local and regional newsrooms. SAPO uses generative AI to personalize its portal and app, provide article summaries and deliver daily news overviews.

Human oversight remains explicit in several deployments. Público uses AI for transcription, translation, audio versions and summaries for younger readers, with newsroom verification and editing before publication. Conta Lá commissioned synthetic commentators for municipal election coverage, with a journalist responsible for fact-checking and final editing. Sports publisher zerozero.pt uses Prosebot, developed with the University of Porto, to transform structured football data into game summaries and drafts in multiple languages.
