Microsoft brings Xbox-style GPU crash diagnostics to Windows
Microsoft is introducing DirectX Dump Files on Windows PCs, bringing GPU crash investigation capabilities from Xbox to PC game developers. Available with Agility SDK 1.620 and PIX 2610.28, the files bring together information from Windows, Direct3D, and GPU drivers to help developers diagnose failures and prevent recurring crashes. AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm are participating in the effort.
When graphics processing stops, DirectX creates a dump file capturing information before Windows resets the GPU. The contents include the last Direct3D runtime state, hardware and driver details, and up to 2 MB of developer-provided data. Developers can save these files on their own machines, but they are not saved by default on players’ production PCs. Studios can instead establish a crash-reporting pipeline to collect data for analysis.
Microsoft’s PIX performance-tuning and debugging tool for DirectX 12 games analyzes the dumps, decodes diagnostic data, identifies hang points, and traces shaders and resources involved in a crash. These capabilities help developers isolate faults and improve rendering reliability.
