OpenAI claims breakthroughs in mathematics, computing and physics
OpenAI says its AI models have made discoveries in harmonic analysis, complexity theory and quantum field theory. The claimed advances include proving the local smoothing conjecture in every spatial dimension, disproving the Exponential Time Hypothesis and providing a mathematically rigorous proof of quantum chromodynamics, which studies interactions between quarks and gluons.
University of Rochester mathematician Alex Iosevich said OpenAI appeared to have resolved the local smoothing conjecture, describing the result as a historic development. He expects AI to transform theoretical mathematics and accelerate exploration of connections between mathematical problems and physical phenomena.
MIT computational complexity expert Ryan Williams said researchers were still verifying the proposed refutation of the Exponential Time Hypothesis. He described the proof as introducing a mysterious method for solving fundamental computational problems more efficiently. If confirmed, the result would challenge a widely accepted assumption underpinning substantial theoretical computer science, although Williams cautioned that practical applications would not follow immediately.
OpenAI enlisted outside expert groups to interpret its research data and guide publication. The mathematics and computer science groups released their AI-produced data immediately, while the physics group deferred publication to prepare its interpretation. OpenAI acknowledged that selecting initial collaborators creates unequal access to information and invited feedback on broadening participation.
