UK data centres face power and climate pressures as investment expands

·1 min read

Investment plans are expanding UK cloud and data centre capacity as demand for AI and data services rises. Oracle plans to invest USD $5 billion in UK cloud infrastructure, targeting sectors including healthcare and finance. CX Tech has proposed a GBP £16.5 billion campus at the former Chapelcross nuclear site near Annan. The 1GW scheme could create 750 construction jobs and 450 permanent roles if approved.

Suppliers are also targeting the costs and complexity of running AI infrastructure. Navyra says its Ale product could cut GPU use by up to 67% on repetitive workloads by reusing verified inference work. Texas Instruments has introduced chips aimed at power faults, outages and timing errors in increasingly dense AI servers. AVK Capital and Partners Group are targeting projects affected by grid delays, offering on-site electricity without upfront power costs.

Resilience and public confidence remain concerns. Westgate warns that wetter, stormier conditions could disrupt UK data centre construction through 2027, while older facilities face risks from hotter summers, flooding and grid strain. A Telehouse survey found that public awareness of data centres is rising but trust is falling amid concerns about electricity use and environmental impact.
