CERN and Mistral partner on physics research models
CERN and French AI company Mistral have formalized a strategic partnership to develop models for scientific research. Announced at the International AI Summit in Dublin, the agreement centers on a Large Physics Model designed specifically for physics. Unlike language models trained on text, the proposed system would draw on physical measurement data, analyses, publications and theory to help answer scientific questions. The partners intend to develop tools useful across scientific disciplines.
Particle physics already uses machine learning throughout data analysis, from processing detector data to drawing physical conclusions. Nikhef researcher Sascha Caron said AI could extend that approach by automating the entire analysis chain into a single process. CERN Information Officer Enroca Porcari described high-energy physics as a unique environment for developing and rigorously testing AI.
In a keynote speech in Dublin, Caron urged Europe to invest rapidly and at scale in its own AI infrastructure, emphasizing the urgency of developing Europe’s first Large Physics Model. Caron coordinates physics for the European SCIANCE network and leads a Nikhef working group exploring AI applications across its research programme. Nikhef plans to introduce the Mistral system soon.
