CNN joins Google’s paid news pilot
Google’s “News AI” pilot now includes more than 400 media outlets worldwide, paying publishers for expanded rights to use their content. New participants include CNN, the Financial Times, Forbes and Axios. The program launched last year with outlets including The Washington Post. Google plans to use licensed reporting for detailed summaries on Google News publisher pages and audio briefings tailored to users’ interests, with clear attribution and direct links to original stories.
The expansion also brings in regional and local publishers, including South Carolina’s The Post and Courier, the nonprofit Texas Tribune, Wyoming’s Oil City News and Illinois-based Shaw Media. CNN described its agreement as a multi-year strategic partnership. Payment amounts and detailed contract terms have not been disclosed.
Publishers are pursuing licensing agreements alongside litigation over unauthorized use of their content, while AI-generated search answers threaten referral traffic. Whether compensation can offset those losses remains uncertain. A 2026 Reuters Institute survey of 280 media executives across 51 countries found that only 20% expected substantial AI-related revenue, while 49% anticipated modest contributions and 20% expected none. Separately, publisher coalition SPUR has introduced an open-source standard to track how AI systems access and use content, seeking greater transparency in licensing relationships.
