IBM plans dual-architecture processor for Z and LinuxONE

IBM announced a dual-architecture mainframe processor at Hot Chips, designed for future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems. The processor is intended to let enterprises run operating systems and applications across both IBM and Arm compute platforms, including Arm-native Linux environments alongside z/OS and Linux on IBM Z.

The announcement is the first processor milestone from IBM and Arm’s collaboration established in April 2026. Arm’s ecosystem includes more than 22 million developers worldwide and spans applications from cloud to edge, including cloud-native and AI software. IBM said Arm workloads on the new processor would gain access to enterprise-grade capabilities such as enhanced reliability, hardware-level fault detection and recovery, advanced encryption, secure key management, and AI acceleration.
