King’s researchers help shape London’s AI jobs plan

Professor Crawford Spence and Professor Damian Grimshaw from King’s Business School contributed to the London AI and Jobs Taskforce, serving on its Professional, Legal, and Financial Services Advisory Group. The three month long taskforce was chaired by technology entrepreneur Baroness Martha Lane-Fox and examined where workers may need the most support as AI changes jobs across the capital.

The taskforce found that just over half of London’s employment is in occupations with relatively high exposure to AI but above-average capacity to adapt. It also identified around 600,000 Londoners in roles that combine higher exposure with lower capacity to adapt, with those workers concentrated in clerical and administrative jobs, disproportionately women and typically paid below the London average.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan accepted three flagship recommendations: creating a London AI Early Action System to detect emerging labour-market change, launching a London AI at Work Partnership to bring employers, workers and educators into job redesign and skills planning, and introducing the London Future Ready Guarantee to connect employers with young Londoners on future jobs, skills and career pathways.
