Norway moves to restrict generative AI in schools

·1 min read

Norway plans to impose a near ban on generative AI in elementary schools and set stricter limits for older students, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said. The policy is aimed at strengthening basic learning skills and reducing excessive reliance on AI tools that officials say could affect learning outcomes.

Støre said AI use among younger children can influence cognitive development, disrupt the learning process and create gaps in foundational education. Students in primary and middle schools would not be allowed to use generative AI tools in classrooms under the proposed framework, while lower secondary students may use them under teacher supervision.

New standards and education policies are expected to take effect in late August, when the new school year begins. The government also plans to allocate funds for more classroom books to offset the impact of increased tablet and iPad use.
