NVIDIA backs NSF regional AI hubs

NVIDIA is participating in the U.S. National Science Foundation’s State and Regional Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Hubs program, a new effort to expand access to advanced computing, data, software and technical expertise for AI-enabled research and education. The program will support state and multistate groups of colleges and universities working with private industry, philanthropic organizations and state and local governments to strengthen America’s AI ecosystem.

The regional hubs are intended to help institutions share AI computing resources, accelerate scientific discovery and prepare students for the AI economy. Consortia will be able to design infrastructure around local needs, using on-premises systems, cloud computing or hybrid models, while pooling expertise and creating pathways for institutions that may lack access to frontier AI research resources.

NVIDIA pointed to its public-private partnership with cofounder Chris Malachowsky and the University of Florida as a model for broader access. Since launching its university-wide initiative in 2020, UF has grown to more than 300 AI-focused faculty and embedded AI education and research across all 16 colleges. NVIDIA has also contributed to the NSF-led National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource pilot program, which helped university researchers turn compute access into usable scientific capacity.

The hubs are also positioned as workforce-development platforms. Universities, community colleges and regional partners can build degree programs, certificates and stackable credentials in areas including physical AI and automation, healthcare, energy, agriculture, manufacturing, quantum computing and cybersecurity, tying AI training to local employers, research priorities and economic development goals.
