UK Sovereign AI backs 12 companies as founder support expands

·1 min read

James Wise, Chair of UK Sovereign AI, said in a quarterly update published on 12 August 2026 that the fund has invested in or reached final legal documentation with 12 UK AI companies. Five investments have been announced and seven more are in closing, with the portfolio companies collectively raising £4B.

The fund’s focus spans compute and infrastructure, frontier-model architectures, AI for health and life sciences, scientific discovery, and trust and security. Newly announced investments since the previous update include CuspAI, which develops AI models for advanced materials; Isomorphic Labs, an AI drug-discovery company; and OLIX, which is developing photonics-based compute architecture to address memory and energy constraints in GPU systems.

UK Sovereign AI is also expanding support beyond capital by broadening access to Isambard-AI and cloud credits through the AI Research Resource. Procurement challenges are planned in the coming weeks, allowing UK AI companies to compete on problems set by government departments, while founder events have taken place in Newcastle, Glasgow, Cardiff and Manchester, with Belfast planned for October 2026. Wise flagged strategic risks including export restrictions on frontier models, stronger cyber capabilities, reliance on open-weight models from China, and the scale of US and Chinese investment in chips, data centres and compute.
