UK AI revenues reach £33.6 billion as scaling pressures persist

·1 min read

UK AI-related revenues increased by 41% to £33.6 billion in 2025, while employment rose by 51% to an estimated 130,400 people. AI-related gross value added reached £18.6 billion, up 58%. Dedicated AI companies almost doubled their revenues to £9.2 billion, signalling stronger growth among businesses focused primarily on AI products and services.

The identified business population reached 10,488 companies, an increase of 79% on 2024. That expansion reflected genuine market growth alongside improved coverage and more prominent AI terminology in company descriptions. The economic estimates are experimental rather than official statistics, with financial measures frequently modelled where detailed accounts are unavailable.

Fundraising by dedicated AI companies more than doubled to £6.3 billion, but NScale and Isomorphic Labs accounted for almost half of the total. Access to equity investment significantly constrained business goals for 61% of survey respondents. Interviews highlighted a divide between well-funded infrastructure and frontier companies and application developers facing tougher fundraising conditions.

Infrastructure pressures also intensified: 72% of surveyed businesses reported increased computing requirements, and 91% of compute users expected costs to rise. Energy prices, grid connections, experienced talent shortages and regulatory uncertainty remained obstacles. Businesses generally favoured specialised applications, more efficient models and diversified technology suppliers over attempting full technological self-sufficiency.
