techUK sees alignment in MHRA health AI review
The MHRA has published findings from the National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare’s Call for Evidence, setting out a major evidence base for how the UK should regulate AI in health and care. The independent advisory group, chaired by Professor Alastair Denniston, drew on 761 responses from patients, clinicians, providers, academics, industry and techUK.
techUK said the findings closely reflect priorities it raised with the MHRA and the Commission. Areas of alignment include a proportionate, risk-based regulatory model across the full lifecycle, significant reform rather than a complete overhaul, and post-market surveillance designed for adaptive AI systems, including monitoring for performance drift and real-world performance.
The findings also support clearer liability rules, shared responsibility across the healthcare system, improved classification guidance for AI systems, and efforts to reduce NHS duplication through better coordination and procurement processes. Formal recommendations are due in the summer and will inform the new regulatory framework linked to the 10 Year Health Plan and the Life Sciences Sector Plan.
