SoftBank tests Garan AI data platform with news publishers

SoftBank Corp (9984.T) launched trial operations of Garan AI on July 22, positioning the platform as a bridge between content companies and AI developers seeking Japanese-language data. SoftBank said more than 30 news organizations have applied to participate, including Mainichi Newspapers Co. Ltd, Sankei Shimbun Co., Kyodo News Service, Shinano Mainichi Shimbun, Sports Nippon, and Daily Tohoku Shimbun.

The platform is designed to address copyright concerns and misinformation risks by processing entrusted content into derivative data that is difficult to restore to the original text. SoftBank alters phrasing and expressions before making the data available to AI developers, while participating content companies receive usage fees. SoftBank covers service operating costs, allowing publishers to pursue revenue without upfront investment.

SoftBank also began accepting usage applications from AI developers on the launch date. The company plans to verify the service through approximately six months of trial operations and aims for full commercialization by January 2027, with future participation planned for government agencies, web service providers, newspapers, and publishers.
