Samsung and SK hynix plan major chip capacity expansion
Samsung and SK hynix plan to invest about 1,350 trillion won into expanding semiconductor manufacturing capacity and data centers over the next ten years. The program spans memory, storage and logic production, with SK hynix focusing on DRAM and NAND Flash and Samsung covering DRAM, NAND Flash and logic for its LSI division.
The investment goes beyond new fab capacity for higher wafer output. It also covers AI data centers, batteries, display manufacturing, chip-making tools, etching, photomasks and other supporting technologies. The South Korean government’s first milestone is to double DRAM production capacity within five years while significantly improving NAND Flash production capacity.
By the end of the ten-year plan, Samsung and SK hynix are expected to add 4-5 semiconductor plants to their South Korean hubs. The expansion is positioned as a major boost to jobs and production capacity, reinforcing South Korea’s role in modern memory and storage manufacturing.
