NVIDIA backs 800 VDC power architecture for AI factories
NVIDIA is positioning 800 VDC power distribution as a practical answer to the growing power demands of accelerated computing. Traditional AC-based systems require multiple conversions between the grid and the GPU, adding losses and complexity as rack density rises. A higher-voltage DC architecture reduces conversion stages so more available power reaches compute systems.
NVIDIA, Google and Microsoft have developed the architecture through the Open Compute Project, publishing a joint white paper in March 2026 and the LVDC Solid-State Transformer Specification v0.3 in July 2026. More than 80 equipment manufacturers and infrastructure companies are already building products aligned with the specification.
Existing AI factories can adopt the NVIDIA MGX-compatible 800 VDC power rack, arriving in the second half of 2026, without changing building-level electrical systems. For larger deployments, a row power center will use an overhead 800 VDC busway to support up to 2 megawatts per row, with availability expected in 2027. New facilities can move toward a DC power block that converts grid power directly to 800 VDC in a single step.
