Musk plans SpaceXSI rebrand after Trump terminology order

·1 min read

Elon Musk said on 4 October 2026 that SpaceX’s artificial intelligence unit, currently known as SpaceXAI, would be renamed SpaceXSI after President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to replace Artificial Intelligence and AI with Super Intelligence and SI in specified official materials. Musk replied, “Yes, we will make that change,” to an X user asking whether the unit would adopt the new terminology, but the account name remained unchanged when Reuters reported the exchange.

The move follows Executive Order 14434, signed on 29 September 2026 and titled Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence. The order applies to federal departments and agencies, not private companies, and does not require changes to existing regulations, contracts, grants or historical documents. Within 60 days, the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology must submit proposed legislative language assessing whether a new definition should modify, expand upon or supersede the existing statutory definition.

SpaceX acquired xAI on 2 February 2026 and later reported Space, Connectivity and AI as separate business segments. The company has described the AI segment as covering AI solutions and computational infrastructure, while warning that the business remains at an early stage of organisational and operational maturity. Trump also announced a Super Intelligence Force led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, with a report expected within 120 days on risks, opportunities and the federal role.
