EU reports constructive talks with Apple over Siri rollout

European technology chief Henna Virkkunen held what the European Commission described as a constructive call with Apple CEO Tim Cook after a public dispute over the rollout of Siri AI in Europe. A Commission spokesperson said the exchange covered topics of common interest and that work between the two sides is continuing.

Apple has said its upgraded Siri AI will not initially be available on iPhones or iPads in the EU, arguing that European competition rules have delayed the release. The company has also said the Digital Markets Act forced it to postpone several other EU features, including iPhone mirroring to Mac, live translation with AirPods and location-based features in Maps.

The Commission has put responsibility on Apple, saying the company has not developed the interoperability needed to meet EU standards. Europe accounted for nearly 27 percent of Apple’s total sales in its last fiscal year, although Apple does not break out EU sales. DMA breaches can lead to fines of as much as 10 percent of a company’s global annual turnover.
