Elsevier pledges tools and funding for European research
Elsevier has pledged support for the European Commission’s AI in Science Enablers Initiative, combining complimentary software access with research partnerships and training. Announced at the AI in Science Summit in Dublin, the commitment aims to support European researchers, healthcare professionals and students as the Commission mobilizes private-sector and philanthropic backing for science.
The company will provide 4,000 complimentary licenses, including 1,000 LeapSpace licenses for research workflows, 1,000 ClinicalKey AI licenses for clinical decision support, 1,000 ClinicalKey Nursing AI licenses and 1,000 Complete Anatomy licenses. Elsevier also proposed a Europe-wide LeapSpace Challenge, with its scope still to be developed with the Commission.
Alongside software access, Elsevier is committing an estimated €1m a year in funding and in-kind support. Plans include at least three new collaborations per year with European research institutions, participation in the Horizon-funded AIRIS project for AI-enabled biomedical hypothesis generation, and a new Centre on Hybrid Intelligence for Trustworthy Research with the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
The pledge also includes training and career development for approximately 10 PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and master’s students in AI per year. Elsevier will work with the Commission to refine the commitment’s details following the summit.
