Defense Department gives employees access to ChatGPT, Grok and Gemini

Defense Department employees can now use three major AI products at work, expanding access to tools intended to support routine tasks across the workforce. The department launched military versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Elon Musk’s Grok on Monday, following Google’s Gemini, which became the first product on the Pentagon’s AI hub last year.

ChatGPT can read documents for unclassified administrative and policy work, while Grok is designed for operational needs such as market research and supply chain management. More than 1.7 million have signed up to use the services so far, according to the department.

The rollout comes as federal agencies continue testing AI for government operations. The Army is piloting Army MAX to help turn mission requirements into standardized contracting documents, with a goal of issuing solicitations in days or weeks rather than weeks or months.
