Beam and Mistral Large 4 pressure closed model pricing
Reflection AI announced Beam on October 7, 2026, targeting corporate users and code developers with a focus on AI agents for engineering pipelines. Mistral launched Large 4, internally nicknamed “le Chonk,” with optimization for cybersecurity, programming, and finance. Both companies are positioning their models as lower-cost alternatives to closed systems from OpenAI and Anthropic.
The open-weight strategy remains uneven. Beam is not yet available as a downloadable model because Reflection AI said it will release the weights and full technical details “soon.” Mistral Large 4 also still requires confirmation in official documentation on open-weight availability. That distinction matters for engineering teams because self-hosting only becomes practical once model weights are actually released.
Open-weight models are gaining usage share, with Brazil Journal reporting they already account for nearly 80% of tokens used in the market. In early 2026, closed models held around 80% of volume. Reflection AI has reached a pre-money valuation of US$25 billion, while Mistral raised €3 billion in September 2026 at a valuation of €21 billion.
Closed providers still lead on revenue because enterprise customers pay for reliability, support, and ready-made integrations. Open models may appeal most to teams with high call volumes, GPU infrastructure, and the ability to manage their own MLOps, while smaller teams may still prefer closed APIs for speed and operational simplicity.
