Apple, Anthropic and OpenAI anchor a busy AI week

·1 min read

Apple confirmed new Apple Home AI features announced at WWDC 2026 require a 2TB iCloud+ plan costing $10 per month or the $37.95 Apple One Premier plan. The capabilities focus on HomeKit Secure Video analysis that identifies people, objects and events, then turns clips into searchable summaries, while notification grouping and 4K HomeKit Secure Video remain outside the paid requirement.

Anthropic dominated the week with research into Claude’s hidden J-space, cybersecurity safeguards for Claude Fable 5, enterprise analytics, early talks with Samsung on a custom chip, and new research tools including Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Science. OpenAI surfaced in reports on a proposed 5 percent US government stake, inference cost optimizations of more than half, GeneBench-Pro for genomics, and an engineering postmortem that found a faulty Azure host and an 18-year-old GNU libunwind bug.

Major platform moves included Microsoft’s Frontier Company with a $2.5 billion investment and 6,000 experts, Meta’s Pocket app for AI-generated gizmos and planned Meta Compute cloud business, Cloudflare’s September 15, 2026 deadline for AI crawler separation, and Square’s ChatGPT and Claude ordering tools for U.S. restaurants. Google, Runway, Netflix, OASIS, Hi3D and NotebookLM added new media, hardware, commerce and creative workflow updates.
