AMD chips to power LUMI-AI supercomputer in Finland

CSC, IT Center for Science Ltd. will build LUMI-AI in Kajaani, Finland, using AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs and 6th Gen AMD EPYC CPUs. The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking signed a procurement contract with Bull on August 31, 2026, for a system intended to expand Europe’s AI and high-performance computing capacity.

LUMI-AI is scheduled for deployment in the second half of 2027 and will support researchers, startups and industry users. Its multi-tenant architecture and API-based access are designed for diverse AI communities and modern development workflows, while planned integration with the LUMI-IQ quantum computing platform points to combined use of conventional and quantum resources.

The system will be operated by the LUMI AI Factory consortium, which includes Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland. It will run from a new data center at the Renforsin Ranta business park in Kajaani, where liquid cooling will capture excess heat for the city’s district heating network. The project has a 387.8 million euro budget, shared equally between the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and the consortium.
