AMD adds packaged memory to Versal Premium Gen 2 SoCs

AMD introduced Versal Premium Gen 2 Memory on Package adaptive SoCs, a new architecture that integrates up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X into a single package. The design delivers up to 288 GB/s of bandwidth in up to 60% less board area, aiming to reduce the risk and development time associated with board-level memory design.

The company is positioning the chips for workloads where bandwidth, power and space are tightly constrained, including physical AI, networking, aerospace and defense systems. Target applications include test and measurement equipment, professional video editing systems, and VPX platforms used for secure communications and defense acceleration.

Sumit Shah, head of product management and marketing for AMD’s Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group, said Memory on Package is intended to remove tradeoffs between bandwidth, space, power and product longevity, allowing customers to build systems closer to their original design goals and bring them to market faster.
