OpenAI buys Pierre Computer to expand Codex
OpenAI has acquired Pierre Computer Company to broaden the capabilities of its Codex AI coding platform. Financial terms were not disclosed. Pierre’s tools for building, understanding, and reviewing code complement Codex’s existing code-generation capabilities, potentially bringing more of the software development workflow into a single platform.
The planned integration could help developers understand legacy codebases, identify potential bugs, and review changes before deployment. OpenAI has not disclosed a specific integration timeline, although Pierre’s capabilities are expected to reach Codex users in the coming months. The acquisition follows the launch of Dots, which extended OpenAI’s coding tools into an always-on assistant.
The purchase strengthens OpenAI’s enterprise software ambitions and increases competition with GitHub Copilot and coding tools from Anthropic, Google, and Meta. It also adds competitive tension to OpenAI’s relationship with Microsoft, its largest investor and cloud partner, which owns GitHub. The deal points toward a broader product strategy centered on integrated development tools rather than code generation alone.
