Claude users report restrictions on game cloning

·1 min read

Some Claude users report that Anthropic’s AI assistant is refusing requests to recreate existing games or their mechanics. The reports come amid growing use of AI for game cloning, reverse-engineering and decompiling, with projects ranging from controversial Fortnite and Fallout clones to fan-made console ports.

A user on X highlighted a rule that could explain the restrictions. It directs Claude to build original games, genre-based games and projects using users’ own designs and assets, but prohibits recreating a specific existing game, even when renamed or described as original. Preventing copyright infringement and potential legal exposure may be a motivation, but that has not been established.

Reports on Claude’s GitHub suggest the restrictions may also be affecting legitimate development tasks. Complaints include claims that Claude refused to reproduce a developer’s own earlier work to implement a similar mechanic elsewhere in the same game project.
